Facebook password as part of your job interview?

Recently there have been a flurry of articles about supplying your Facebook (FB) password as part of your interview and/or securing a new job.  I don’t think employers should have access to your FB page!  Even Facebook is fighting back.

That being said:

  1. If the job you are interviewing for involves you posting on FB for the company or a client – most likely you will be posting using your work email alias – not your personal email.  However – if your personal FB page is unprofessional…it indicates a lack of professionalism for your potential job.  So, I would say keep your personal FB page clean and something you wouldn’t be embarrassed about if it were public.
  2. Your personal life is your personal life – and it shouldn’t matter what you have on on your FB page – and yet it does.  If you are posting indecent pictures, images of you getting high, drinking etc.  There is a very good chance your potential employer might see this.  My suggestion – don’t post this type of stuff anywhere – why – it almost always comes back to haunt you and things have a habit of living forever on the internet.
  3. Never burn your bridges from your past job(s) on FB…usually comes back to bite you – besides potential employers won’t think much of you and might worry about you posting something similar about them.

If the company you are interviewing with does any type of back end work in Facebook – applications, design etc…they will most likelyhave access to your FB page.  Even if it is private.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that I do NOT support giving your Facebook password to  your potential employer.  I DO support you keeping your FB content private, clean and G rated!  Remember one picture/comment can ruin your potential for a career, or for a job you really want.
